What Has A Domaining Forum Done For You Lately?

Posted On Friday, January 8, 2010

“What have you done for me lately?”  You’ve heard the lyrics before on the classic song by Janet Jackson.  This single is from Janet Jackson’s third studio album entitled, “Control” released in 1986.  Spin the web a little further and I can now ask the main question that this blog entry is focused on.

What has a domaining forum done for you lately?

Not much is my answer, but I can say at one point in time I used to live on domaining forums.  Now I don’t want to say that they are a thing of the past because they are not.  In fact I still believe that domaining forums are an important staple to our community and can even be considered a life line.  With all of the activity occurring on domaining forums, in order to really benefit from them you’ve got to be on them for more time that I can personally afford.

With that in mind, I bring up my next point.  I’ve learned to get what I want out of domaining forums quickly.  Since my company is focused on acquiring forum, geo and product based domain names I simply visit NamePros.com and post my thread in the Domain Names Wanted section.   This normally provides me with a whole world of options to choose from.  Sometimes if I like a domain name I will research it a little further to see if I can get away with registering another domain extension.

If there are no domain extensions worthy of buying then I will make an offer to the person who has private messaged me and see where that takes me.  My whole point in stating this is I normally let people come to me.  I used to do the exact opposite when I first started as a domainer and I quickly learned that time-wasting lesson.  Now don’t get me wrong, every now and then I will take a peak in the Domains For Sale sections as well.

Recently I decided to browse the Domain Name Bargain Bin.  This is the section where you just might find some cheap internet gold.  That’s just what happened to me.  I discovered the following thread.  The NP member posted a decent list of domains, but only one sparked my interest.  I quickly private messaged the member and stated that I would like to purchase hairgels.org for $5.00!  He agreed and the domain was in my dynadot account within the next few days.

Now if you go to hairgels.com, you might see something very familiar.  The domain name is owned by Name Administration Inc., Frank Schilling’s company.  This was another no brainer for me.  If Frank felt that hairgels.com was worth the registration then hairgels.org is just waiting to be picked by the right person for development.  Since hairgels.com and .net are not developed I can try and steal the show with a developed site.

We will see where this lands me in a few months, but one thing I can say is that a domaining forum worked for me in this case.  I can potentially turn a $5 investment into a stable residual income.  Stay tuned for that blog entry, once it happens!

lol I really relate to this post.
Forums are almost a total waste of time these days and I run one !
I’ve been a member of dnf and npros for about 6 years.
They used to be a hive of activity but that all started going pear shaped about 18 months ago.
Forums definitely have declined in terms of popularity. like you I still check them out but I spend very little time on them.

Im sure much is to do with the economy but there are other factors too ~

Nice buy re hairgels btw (a tasty product domain for sure !)

    Andy,

Long time no talk. You were one of the first domain bloggers I had the pleasure of meeting when I decided to start the (discredit.org) blog. I’ve been to your forum a few times, I remember when you first started it. It seems like it serves its purpose for your brokerage.

I agree the main domaining forums which are currently out there have taken a bit of a nose dive within the past two years. The only benefit I see for such forums is the cheap acquisition every now and then or the launching of a domaining product, service, blog.

Thanks, it was one of those must buy situations. Glad to see you found the new blog Andy, hope you are doing well my friend!

I rarely visit domain forums anymore, for me they have outlived there use. For buying cheap quality domains I scan and buy through Bido and for domain news and blogger info I use an agg service, Domaining.com.

Forums are declining as more instantaneous methods of communication become commonplace. Sadly these new tools don’t provide the same level of community as forums. I hope that means that a swing back toward forums will happen sooner or later. But it likely won’t happen until forum software allows realtime communication.
