What Do Renewal Notices And Spam Boxes Have In Common?

Posted On Thursday, March 3, 2011

The infamous renewal notice can sometimes be the last lifeline a domainer gets as a reminder to renew a domain name.  Just as we think that we have everything figured out the renewal notice some how never gets to our inbox and we enter panic mode once we realize someone now owns the domain name that we worked are ass off to get.  Sound familiar?  Well, if it hasn’t happened to you then cross your fingers as it tends to happen more often then you think!

Do you remember my last post, Ted2011 Speaker Aaron Koblin Forgets To Renew TheSheepMarket.com?  If you don’t then click on the link!  To refresh your memory Aaron Koblin who is known around the world for some of his digital masterpieces let an important domain expire called TheSheepMarket.com.  I noticed that this domain name expired and while writing an entry about the matter I decided to contact him directly.  Fortunately I was able to reach Aaron and he was lets say SHOCKED!  Here is the email I received from Aaron:

Holy shit!

It JUST expired. Never got a notice or anything… can’t believe it.
THANK YOU for letting me know.
I’ve renewed for 9 years just now :) … Hope that damn DNS kicks in SOON …. arg.
He renewed the domain name for nine years!  Wow!  That shows you the guys is not messing around.  But enough talk about what was done after the fact.  What in the world happened to cause this in the first place?  He sent me a second email which described the problem:
This is really messed up. I just checked my spam folder and I found a noticed that says:

“The following domain name(s) are set to automatically renew on the expiration date(s) listed:

THESHEEPMARKET.COM – Mar. 01, 2011″

I wonder what happened : /

That’s right folks, his renewal email from GoDaddy triggered a spam filter!  It then proceeded to find its way right into his spam folder.  This domain name could of ended up in one of our hands if he hadn’t realized that it expired. :P   Just joking, I am sure we would of all done the right thing.  Anyways, check your spam rules and see if the same thing might be happening to you!
I had a chance to look at TheSheepMarket.com today earlier at work and I gotta say that it is quite intriguing.  If you’ve got a bit of time to waste you should go check it out!  I am off to watch Karate Kid 2 on Netflix!  Have a good night everyone!
