Keeping Yourself Motivated

Posted On Wednesday, February 17, 2010

For me domaining has been a mixture of uphill battles and wonderful success stories.  I have struggled just as much as I have succeeded.  Sometimes I sit back and wonder how I am able to stay motivated when things seems to be at a standstill.  Here is an example, if I build a small site which takes around three to four weeks to get indexed by the search engines.  The down period can ultimately delay me from moving forward on other projects.

I have to think past the stats and monetization efforts.  I have to think about the future and ignore the present.  This is not the easiest thing to do.  Take it from me, there are times when you have put a great deal of effort into a domain project and are left empty handed.  Am I risk adverse?  As a domainer I would like to think that I am!  There is no telling that the projects I am working on will ever net any real money, but that feeling when a project comes together and the money starts rolling in is very addicting.

Since I have been down this path before and have reaped the benefits I have been able to replicate this feeling in my head.  I trick myself into feeling this way about every project that I work on, no matter what the size.  Right now I am building out a fairly large portion of my portfolio.  These domain names are lucky to receive a few clicks here and there on a monthly basis, but the overall outcome of such a build out adds up tremendously.  This knowledge alone keeps me motivated.  I understand the big picture and will do what it takes to achieve the goals I have set for myself.

Although the domain game can be a very lonely one, you have to constantly challenge yourself.  Keep a positive mindset when working through these challenges and compare yourself to what others are doing.  There are plenty of domainers blogging about there project based experiences.  This is a great way to keep yourself motivated.  I tend to find inspiration by watching what others are doing.  The energy that we all share is viral.  Once you catch wind of this you can keep yourself moving on a project for months to come.

For me motivation is a constant practice I am continually figuring out.  There is no one way to keep myself motivated!  If one method does not work I try to create something new.  This is a fast paced industry and the only way to keep up with the speed of it is by lighting a few afterburners.  How do you keep yourself motivated?

Some weeks you feel like a genius and the next week its OMG whats happening. I always try not to get to atteched to one category of domains. Over the years I have been very surprised at some money thats made in categories I would have no interest in. Always try new affiliate programs and always compare and change.
