Does Your Domain Blog Suck?
Sorry for starting this entry off with such a harsh title. The title has more to do with the alarming concept that all domainers are perfectionist then it has to do with the nature of a domain blog. As many people in the industry have noticed domain blogs have been popping up like wild mushrooms all over the domaining industry landscape. Now to the main point of this blog entry.
Lately I have noticed a common trend. Great domain blogs undergoing constant changes. Comments from domain blog owners that they feel perhaps there brand isn’t strong enough or they wish they had done something different to start with. Well guess what guys? Your domain blog is just fine! That’s right, your blog doesn’t suck and you don’t need to constantly fine tune it. You are suffering from the dreaded domainer trait called perfectionism. We are our own biggest critic!
I myself was infected by such a trait. Instead of focusing on my domain portfolio, I over focused on issues with my domaining blog. These issues could of easily been ignored, but noooooo! I decided to continue to tweak and fine tune over and over again. My last adventure caused me to upgrade to WordPress 2.9 automatically! That’s right folks, I didn’t even bother to test the upgrade option and boy did I learn my lesson. This upgrade option caused half of my plugins to be rendered useless! Luckily I was smart enough to make backups before I issued that automatic upgrade command. The only problem with this is I had to get my hosting provider to roll back to the backup, since my blog was completely borked!
That’s right I said borked! It worked just fine but did not work with the custom theme that I have grown to love! I then proceeded to change the theme to default. This caused my blog to look completely naked. After waiting for my beloved hosting provider to restore the backup I was forced to explain on twitter what was going on. One reader even took the time to notify me of the issues and for that I am grateful. This reminded me again that such tweaking was not needed! The time that I spent working on restoring the blog to its normal state was time wasted.
This time could of been used on domain development. Once hostgator restored the blog to the backup which was provided I ran into yet another problem! They restored the blog onto another shared IP, one which required me to wait a while for propagation to occur. To quickly summarize it the blog was going to be broken for quite some time. Although it looked fine when using a proxy my TimeWarner connection did not take notice of the new IP until the next morning.
Excuse me for ranting, banting, bickering and all out complaining but none of this had to happen! So I repeat the question which sparked me to write this entry. Does your domain blog suck? The answer is no it does not, so leave it alone for a while and focus on the bread and butter of your domaining business.
This brings me to an interesting entry: The Side-Effects of Rushing to Upgrade Worpress
Damn that domain gang! The article was literally published right before I hit the upgrade button.
