A Question About Site Builders
Large scale site building companies are springing up left and right. Domain owners with medium to large portfolios are taking advantage of such sites and are building large networks which would of nearly been impossible without such innovative solutions. Although there are a few drawbacks such as rev sharing, there is one major question I have had about using such tools.
What happens when you sell your site?
To explain the question a little more, think about the fact of how you have utilized a free website builder service and are stuck with hosting the site on that given company’s hosting platform. If a buyer comes along and says, hey I want to buy your site. How can you technically sell the site to them?
This has been something which I have thought about long and hard. Would the new buyer be forced to have to utilize the platform as well? Would they need to open up there very own site builder account? So far the only service I have used is DevHub and I can say the service works very well. It has allowed me to place on the first page of google for the key phrase “dating talk” and I’ve already been contacted by potential advertisers who have run into the site.
On top of that this ranking only took a few weeks to achieve. To say the least I was impressed, but that question of who owns the rights to the website that was built really has haunted me. There are a few other questions I have as well, but this is the deal breaker for me. If a solution could be developed, where a site building company is willing to transfer a site based on a sale or based on a user’s request outside of there network then that makes for a very attractive service.
Until then I will have to play it safe on which domains I used with the site builder based services!

Have you tried SmartName services? I’ve moved several domains to them. They’re partners with Afternic, so I guess moving the site to a buyer would not be a problem.

Just curious as to Devhub’s feedback on this issue…

This is an excellent question Jason, and one I am sure they do not publish. I would imagine DevHub or any other would not transfer. I think they would say if you like the site so much, then become a member. You can always explain that to a potential buyer and they may like that it is that easy to take over. Easier than setting up hosting and getting files. For the most part people want your name unless the site is a big site doing big business. But you ask a great question. Hopefully they get back to you with the right answer.
